Ernie Els, defensor del título, eligió jugar en Singapur

Els se ha visto tentado por los organizadores del torneo de Singapur, y rechazó la oferta del Mundial Match Play. El irlandés Padraig Harrington, sexto del mundo, y el estadounidense Phil Mickelson, segundo, también jugarán en Singapur en vez de hacerlo en Finca Cortesín. El único español que figura en el palmarés de este Mundial "por hoyos", que antes se jugaba en el Reino Unido, es Severiano Ballesteros, que lo ganó en cinco ocasiones y sin que perdiera una final. El estadounidense Arnold Palmer fue el primer ganador del Mundial Match Play, en 1964, seguido del surafricano Gary Player. Ambos jugadores dominaron los cinco primeros años del torneo.
